Here is a whole zoo full of animals–and there are still more–that everybody, big and small, can have fun creating!

STEP 1

Mouse

MATERIALS

a tall, round cork
2 red glass-headed pins, 1 black one
a little grey, black or white felt

  1. CONSTRUCTION
Cut the cork to shape the snout of the mouse. Cut the bottom a little so it stands up. (See drawings 1 and 2). Sand the cuts.
  2. Stick in the pins to make the eyes and the nose.
Cut the ears and tail from felt (see drawing 3).
  3. Make tiny slits in the cork for the ears and a hole for the tail. Glue them in place.
STEP 2

RABBIT

MATERIALS

a cone-shaped cork
a tall, round cork
a piece of round cork about ¼ inch (10 mm.) high
a little blue, black and white felt
a red soft-tip pen
a tiny piece of white paper
glue
a very sharp knife
a blue pipe cleaner

CONSTRUCTION

  1. Cut a piece 1/8 inch (5 mm.) high off the widest part of the cone-shaped cork; the rest forms the head.
  2. Cut the ears from the blue felt. Glue them to the back of the head.
  3. Cut a white oval and a little black circle for each eye. Glue the eyes in place.
  4. Cut out the teeth from a little piece of white paper (the color photograph shows how they should look). Glue them in place.
  5. Use the red soft-tip pen to draw the nose and mouth (see color photograph).
  6. Cut the tall, round cork for the body along the blue line in drawing 4. Glue the ¼ inch (10 mm.) high round piece to the bottom of it in the position shown in the photograph.
  7. Make the paws from 2 little pieces of bent pipe cleaner. Make 2 holes with a needle in the cork and stick the paws into them.
  8. Cut out the tail from blue felt and glue it on (see drawing 5). Glue the head to the body.
STEP 3

CAT

MATERIALS

a tall, round cork
a cone-shaped cork
a colored pipe cleaner
a little green felt for the ears, yellow felt for the eyes, and black for the whiskers

CONSTRUCTION

  1. Cut a circle of cork from the widest end of the cone-shaped cork so the cork is 1 ¼ inches (3 cm.) long.
  2. Stick 3/8 inch (1.5 cm.) piece of the pipe cleaner into the body to make the neck. Stick the neck and attached body into the head.
  3. Stick in the rest of the pipe cleaner to make the tail. Shape it as in drawing 8.
  4. Cut out the ears, the eyes and the whiskers (see drawing 8). Glue them in place as shown in the color photograph.
STEP 4

HORSE

MATERIALS

a tall, round cork
a cone-shaped cork
a little black, brown and white felt
5 burnt wooden matchsticks
a black soft-tip pen
a sharp knife

CONSTRUCTION

  1. Cut a point at the burned end of 4 matchsticks. Make 4 slanted holes on one side of the tall, round cork, using a needle rubbed in paraffin. Stick the pointed ends of the matchsticks into the holes to form legs (see drawing 9).
  2. Make the 5th matchstick pointed on both ends. Make a hole on the top of the cork and stick the matchstick in to form the neck.
  3. Cut 2 white ovals and 2 black circles from felt to make the eyes. Glue them in place on the cone-shaped cork, which is the head.
  4. Draw the horse’s nose and mouth with the black soft-tip pen (see drawing 9).
  5. Cut out and glue the black ears to the back of the head.
  6. Carefully cut a slit along the back of the head.
  7. Cut the mane from brown felt, following drawing 10. Then glue the mane into the slit.
  8. Make the tail from brown felt (drawing 9).
  9. Make a little slit for sliding the tail in at the end of the body. Glue it in place.
  10. Make a hole in the bottom of the head and stick the neck into it, using a little glue.
STEP 5

FISH

MATERIALS

a tall, round cork
some very thin cork (you can cut the thickness of a small piece of sheet cork in half); you can use drawing paper painted with gouache and shellacked instead
2 black, glass-headed pins
a red soft-tip pen (make sure that it has permanent water-proof ink)

CONSTRUCTION

  1. Cut the tall, round cork as shown in drawings 11 and 12.
  2. Cut out two fins and a tail from the very thin cork or paper (see drawing 13).
  3. Glue the tail and fins in place (see color photograph).
  4. Stick in the pin eyes.
  5. Draw the scales and the lines on the fins and tail with the red pen.
STEP 6

OSTRICH

MATERIALS

2 cone-shaped corks
a flat cork (or a thick round piece cut from a large cork)
a little white Bristol board
a large needle
2 red, glass-headed pins
a red soft-tip pen
2 pieces of pipe cleaner, one about 2 ½ inches (6.5 cm). And one about 2 inches (5 cm). long
some feathers

CONSTRUCTION

  1. Start with the head:
  2. Stick the two pins in one of the cone-shaped corks, for eyes. Then stick in 2 small feathers for the top-knot.
  3. Cut the beak from Bristol board (see drawing 14). One the inside, draw a red diamond shape with the red soft-tip pen. Glue the beak on.
  4. Use the short piece of pipe cleaner for the neck. Make a hole in the head with the needle and push in one end of the neck. Then make a hole in the body cork and put the other end in it.
  5. Do the same thing with the other piece of pipe cleaner to make the leg and base (use the flat cork for the base).
  6. Stick some feathers into the back of the body. Space them out well (see the color photograph). Be sure the ostrich is balanced so it can stand up. Push the head forwards or backwards if necessary. The base should be flat and the leg straight.
STEP 7

DOG

MATERIALS

a tall, round cork
a cone-shaped cork
a little red, black and white felt
4 burnt matchsticks (try to use red wooden ones; you can paint them)
a black soft-tip pen
a sharp knife
glue

CONSTRUCTION

  1. Start with the head (see drawing 15):
  2. Cut 2 white ovals and 2 black circles for the eyes from the felt. Glue them in place on the cone-shaped cork.
  3. Cut out the ears from red felt. Glue them in place.
  4. Draw the nose and mouth with the black soft-tip pen.
  5. Cut one end of 3 matches into a point. Use 2 matches to make the paws, and one match to make the tail. Cut points on both ends of the 4th match for the neck.
