Crafts: Racing Car

This little racing car really rolls and it goes fast! If you make a few cars (they are easy to make), they can have races. They work best on a small hill.

Materials

  • a tall, round cork for the driver
  • a cone-shaped cork for the front of the car
  • a small cork, or a piece of round cork ½ inch (23 mm.) high cut from the narrowest part of a cone-shaped cork for the back rest
  • a cork ball 1 inch (2.5 cm.) in diameter for the head
  • 6 round pieces of cork about ¼ inch (1 cm.) high
  • a little round piece from a small cork to make the steering wheel
  • red and black gouache paints
  • red, black, yellow and green soft-tip pens
  • colorless nail polish
  • 2 thin wooden dowels 2 inches (5 cm) long
  • 2 white thumbtacks and 2 red ones
  • a red, glass-headed pin
  • a red pipe cleaner
  • a little paper
  • a large needle
  • a piece of cork 1 ¼ inches x 3 inches (3 cm. x 7.5 cm.)
  • a knife
  • sandpaper
  • scissors
  • glue
STEP 1

Construction

Cut the piece of cork so it is 1 ¼ inches x 3 inches (3 cm. x 7.5 cm.). This is the base of the car.

STEP 2

Glue the steering wheel in place on the cone-shaped cork (see drawing 4).

STEP 3

Paint the cone-shaped cork red, the steering wheel black, and the small, round cork red. Also paint the middle of the round pieces that will be the wheels red.

STEP 4

When everything is dry, cover all the parts but the steering wheel with 2 coats of colorless nail polish.

STEP 5

While that dries, make the driver.

STEP 6

Glue the ball onto the long, round cork.

STEP 7

Draw the face. Stick in the pin for the nose.

STEP 8

Draw some hair. Also color the top of the cap green and yellow. Cut the visor out of the paper. Paint it red and glue it in place (see drawing 1).

STEP 9

The pipe cleaner arms are about 2 inches (5 cm.) long. Stick them in place.

STEP 10

Cut the 2 remaining round pieces of cork in half. Make a groove in each piece as shown in the drawing 2. Glue them under the base of the car.

STEP 11

Make points on the ends of the dowels. Put them through the grooves in the cut pieces of cork. Then stick them into the middle of the wheels. To do this more easily, first make a hole in each wheel with a large needle.

STEP 12

Glue the front and back of the car on the base. Glue the driver in place.

STEP 13

Stick the white thumbtacks into the front and the red ones in the back.

STEP 14

Shape the arms so that they hold the steering wheel.
